Posies: Their Meaning and When to Send One

A posy is one of those quietly lovely things people order more often than they realise. It's small, roughly round, meant to be held in one hand, and it's what we reach for when someone wants to say something genuine without making a fuss of it.

A posy is one of those quietly lovely things people order more often than they realise. Small, round, held in one hand, and honest. In our experience it's the arrangement customers reach for when they want to say something real without turning it into a production.

What a Posy Actually Is

A posy is a small, roughly round bunch of flowers, gathered so the blooms sit at a similar height and the whole thing reads as one neat cluster. It's built to be held comfortably in one hand, which is why you'll see posies at weddings, but it works just as beautifully as a gift that slips straight into a small vase at home. The word itself is an old spelling of "poesy" (poetry), which is a nice clue to what a posy has always been for: a little arrangement that carries a message.

Unlike a big showy bouquet built for impact, a posy is intimate by design. Our florists tend to build them around a tight, considered palette rather than throwing everything at it. Fewer flower types, chosen well, is what gives a posy its charm.

A Short History: The Tussie-Mussie

Posies have been around for centuries, and originally they were as practical as they were pretty. In earlier times, small bunches of fragrant flowers and herbs, known as "tussie-mussies", were carried close to the face, partly for the scent. Rosemary, lavender and other aromatic herbs were common, which is a large part of why fragrance is still central to a good posy's character today.

Where posies really took on meaning was the Victorian era and the language of flowers, or floriography. Sending a small bunch became a way to pass on a sentiment when saying it plainly wasn't the done thing. Different blooms carried different associations, so a posy could become a coded little message you held in your hand.

A posy is the original way of saying something with flowers rather than about them, which is exactly why it still lands so well today.

Because of that history, a posy tends to read as thoughtful and personal rather than grand. It says "I chose this for you", not "look how much I spent". A lot of the meaning still comes from the flowers you put in it, and these are the well-established associations our florists lean on.

What a Posy Conveys

A few classic flower meanings worth knowing when you're choosing a posy:

Modern Occasions a Posy Suits Beautifully

The scale is the whole point. A posy shines any time a full-sized bouquet would feel like too much but you still want to send something with heart. It's ideal for a bedside table, a work desk, a hospital room or a small kitchen bench. That makes it perfect for a small thank you, a get-well pick-me-up, a new-baby congratulations, or a "just thinking of you" that doesn't need an occasion at all.

We also love a posy for the quieter moments: welcoming a new neighbour, thanking a teacher, or brightening someone's Monday for no reason other than kindness. It's an easy, affordable way to be generous, and it never feels over the top.

If you're not sure where to start, have a browse through the shop and pick the colours and blooms that feel most like the person you're sending to. That instinct is usually right.

How We'd Choose One

Keep it simple. Pick one or two flowers you love, choose a colour that suits the moment (soft and pale for calm and comfort, brighter tones for celebration), and let the fragrance do some of the work. A posy doesn't need to be complicated to be meaningful — half the charm is in the restraint. When you're ready, our florists are happy to build one to suit, so tell us the sentiment and we'll take it from there in the shop.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a posy and a bouquet?

Size and shape, mostly. A posy is a small, round, hand-held bunch with a tight palette, while a bouquet is generally larger and more elaborate. A posy is the better choice when you want something intimate that suits a bedside table or a small bench.

Are posies a good gift, or just for weddings?

Both. Posies make lovely wedding flowers, but they're also a genuinely thoughtful gift for thank-yous, get-well wishes, new babies or a simple "thinking of you". Their smaller scale is a feature, not a limitation.

How long will a posy last?

It depends on the blooms, but with a fresh trim of the stems, clean water changed every couple of days, and a spot out of direct sun and away from fruit, most posies hold well for several days.

Can I choose the flower meanings in my posy?

Absolutely, and it's part of the fun. Tell us the sentiment you're after and our florists can lean on classic flower meanings — roses for love, freesia for friendship, lavender for comfort — to build something that quietly says the right thing.
